Srinagar to Katra Taxi: Vaishno Devi Route Guide
Katra is not a day trip. It is roughly 260 kilometres and eight to ten hours from Srinagar over the Jammu highway, and the single most common mistake is treating it like a long version of the Gulmarg run. This guide covers what the drive actually involves, what it costs, and how to plan the Vaishno Devi part around it.

How long does Srinagar to Katra take?
Eight to ten hours for roughly 260 km, via Qazigund, the Jawahar Tunnel, Banihal, Ramban and Udhampur. Highway conditions and landslide closures make the timing less predictable than any valley route.
The variability is the thing to plan around. The stretch between Ramban and Udhampur is prone to delays from roadworks and landslides, particularly in monsoon, and a run that takes eight hours one week can take twelve the next.
Leaving early matters more here than anywhere else. A six or seven in the morning departure gives you daylight for the whole drive and margin for a hold-up.
What does the Katra taxi cost?
Quoted separately from valley sightseeing because of the distance and the return leg. A one-way drop, a return with waiting days, and a round trip are three different quotes — say which you want when asking.

What happens once you reach Katra?
Katra is the base town. The Vaishno Devi shrine is a 12 km trek uphill from there, done on foot, by pony, palki or helicopter. No vehicle goes to the shrine — your taxi’s job ends at Katra.
The yatra requires a free RFID registration slip, obtained at Katra before starting the trek. Carry photo ID for every member of your group. Helicopter tickets are booked separately and well in advance — they sell out during festival periods.
Budget a full day for the trek itself. Most pilgrims start in the evening or very early morning to avoid the heat.
Plan on at least one night in Katra. Arriving after a ten-hour drive and starting a 12 km climb the same day is not realistic for most people.
When should you do this route?
March to May and September to November are the most comfortable. Avoid peak monsoon — landslides on the Ramban stretch are common. Winter is drivable but the Jawahar Tunnel approach can close after heavy snow.
Navratri periods bring very heavy pilgrim traffic at Katra itself, which affects accommodation more than the drive. If your dates fall in a festival window, book the stay well ahead.

Can you combine Katra with a Kashmir trip?
Yes, and it is the usual pattern — the valley first, then Katra on the way out, flying home from Jammu. It saves the return drive entirely and is worth structuring your flights around.
The common shape is four or five days in the valley — Srinagar, Gulmarg, Pahalgam, Sonamarg — then the drive to Katra, a night there, the yatra, and onward to Jammu for the flight home. One vehicle and one driver handle the whole thing.

What if you are starting from Jammu or Katra instead?
Jammu city, airport or railway station to Katra is about 50 km and an hour and a half. The Katra to Srinagar leg is the same 260 km and eight to ten hours as the outbound run — leave Katra by early afternoon if you want to reach Srinagar the same evening.
A large share of this route runs in the pilgrim direction: fly or take the train into Jammu, do the yatra first, then continue into the valley. The Jammu–Katra hop is short enough that we meet trains and flights at any hour, including the early-morning arrivals that suit a same-day darshan slot.
Coming back the other way, the timing question matters more than the distance. If your darshan slot is in the morning, an early-afternoon departure from Katra puts you in Srinagar by evening. If the slot is at night, do not try to drive after it — take the next morning instead. The Ramban and Banihal stretches are the slowest part of the road and are not worth doing tired in the dark.

Is the route safe in monsoon?
It is driven year-round, but the Ramban to Udhampur stretch is prone to landslide delays in heavy monsoon. If your dates fall in July or August, allow extra time and treat the schedule as flexible.
How long is Jammu to Katra by taxi?
