Kashmir Taxi in Winter: Snow Season Travel Guide
Kashmir in winter is a different country from Kashmir in May. Roads close at short notice, the Gulmarg approach switches to chained vehicles, some valleys shut entirely, and a plan with no slack in it will lose you the one thing you came for. This guide covers how taxi travel actually works between December and February.

What is winter travel in Kashmir actually like?
Beautiful and slower. Srinagar, Gulmarg and Pahalgam all run through winter with weather delays. Gurez and the Leh crossing are closed. Expect longer drive times, occasional road closures, and one extra transfer on the Gulmarg approach in heavy snow.
Nothing about winter makes the valley unreachable — it makes it slower and less predictable. A Srinagar to Gulmarg run that takes two hours in June can take three after fresh snow, and the road can shut for a few hours while it is cleared.
The practical consequence is scheduling. Winter itineraries that are packed edge to edge fail; ones with a spare day absorb a closure and carry on. That single planning decision matters more than any vehicle choice.
When exactly is the snow season?
Reliable snow runs from late December to late February. Chillai Kalan, the harshest forty days, falls roughly 21 December to 31 January — that is when snowfall is heaviest and closures are most likely. Early December and March are shoulder months and much less certain.
If snow is the reason for your trip, aim for January. If you want winter scenery with fewer disruptions, late February into early March is a gentler compromise, though fresh snowfall is less guaranteed.
The Christmas and New Year window is the busiest and most expensive period of the entire year, and vehicle availability genuinely runs out. Larger vehicles go first.
What is the chained-vehicle rule at Tangmarg?
During heavy snowfall the Tangmarg–Gulmarg stretch is restricted to vehicles fitted with snow chains. Your booked taxi stops at Tangmarg and you transfer to a chained local car for the final climb. It is charged separately and applies to every vehicle class.
No vehicle is exempt from this. A Tempo Traveller, an Innova and a sedan are treated identically — the rule is enforced by the local administration for safety, not by operators for revenue. Anyone promising to drive you straight through in heavy snow is either not going to, or should not be.
Chained-vehicle rates move with conditions and are paid on the spot. Carry cash: this is not a card transaction.
On clear winter days with no fresh snowfall, the restriction is often not in force and your own vehicle goes all the way. You will not know which it is until the day, so budget for the transfer and be pleased when it is not needed.
Which destinations stay open in winter?
Open: Srinagar, Gulmarg, Pahalgam, Sonamarg (weather permitting). Closed: Gurez, and the Zojila crossing to Kargil and Leh. Doodhpathri and Yusmarg are reachable in mild conditions but are the first to become impassable after heavy snow.

Pahalgam deserves a note: the town stays open and reachable, but Betaab, Aru and Chandanwari frequently close in deep winter. The union counter will tell you on the day.
Which vehicle is best in snow?
Larger vehicles hold heat better on long winter days, so the Innova or Urbania is a real comfort upgrade between December and February. Beyond that, vehicle class does not exempt you from any road rule — a bigger car is warmer, not more permitted.
This is a common misunderstanding. People upgrade to an SUV expecting to bypass the chained-vehicle transfer, and it does not work that way. What you actually gain from a larger vehicle in winter is cabin warmth, better ride quality on cleared-but-rutted roads, and space for the bulkier luggage that winter travel involves.

How do winter rates differ?
Base daily rates are the same — sedan from ₹2,500, Ertiga ₹2,800, Innova ₹3,000, Tempo Traveller ₹3,800. What changes is availability pricing around Christmas and New Year, and the extra chained-vehicle charge at Tangmarg.
Winter does not carry a blanket surcharge. The cost differences come from two places: peak-window demand in the last week of December, and the local transfers that snow makes necessary. Both should be explained to you before you book rather than discovered on the road.
Book earlier than you would in summer. Availability in that end-of-December window is the tightest of the year, and it is the larger vehicles that disappear first because groups plan further ahead.
What should you plan for?
A spare day, cash for local transfers, and warmer clothing than you think. Also expect slower mornings — roads are ploughed after first light, so winter days start later than summer ones.
Carry cash. The chained vehicle at Tangmarg, the Pahalgam union counter and pony rides are all cash transactions, and connectivity is patchier in winter than in summer.
Allow for luggage bulk. Heavy coats and boots eat boot space, and a car that was adequate in June is tight in January — another reason to size up a class if you are borderline.
What happens if a road closes mid-trip?
Your driver will usually know before you do and will suggest swapping that day’s destination. Tell him the evening before if you want to reorder the plan. A spare day in the itinerary is what turns a closure from a disaster into an inconvenience.
Closures are typically hours rather than days, and clearing operations run promptly. The problem is never the closure itself — it is a schedule with no room to absorb it.
If Gulmarg is the reason for the trip, put it early in the itinerary rather than on the last day. That way a closure still leaves you a second attempt.

Is it safe to travel around Kashmir by taxi in winter?
Yes. Vehicles operating through the season are prepared for the conditions, drivers work these roads daily, and the restrictions that exist — such as the chained-vehicle rule above Tangmarg — are safety measures rather than obstacles. The main adjustment is accepting slower, less predictable days.
Will I definitely see snow?
In January, almost certainly. Late December and February are very likely. Early December and March are shoulder months where snow is possible but not guaranteed. Gulmarg holds snow longest and is the most reliable bet in a marginal season.
How much does the chained vehicle at Tangmarg cost?
It varies with conditions and demand, and is paid directly on the spot in cash. It is separate from your daily taxi fare. Your driver will tell you the going rate on the day and will wait at Tangmarg while you go up.
Are winter taxi rates higher than summer?
Base daily rates are the same year-round. What rises is peak-window pricing in the last week of December and the first days of January, when availability across the valley is tightest. The extra costs in winter are the local transfers, not a seasonal surcharge on the car.
Can I still visit Sonamarg in January?
Sometimes. The Sonamarg road is weather dependent in deep winter and closes after heavy snowfall. It is worth keeping in the plan as a flexible day rather than a fixed one, and asking your driver the previous evening.
Does the Dal Lake freeze?
Parts of it freeze in a cold spell, and in a severe Chillai Kalan the surface can freeze more extensively. Shikara operations stop when that happens. It is a spectacular thing to see but not something to plan a trip around, since it depends entirely on the season.
How many days should a winter trip be?
At least one day more than the same trip in summer. Four days of sightseeing needs five days of itinerary in January, so that a single road closure does not remove a destination entirely.
