Srinagar to Sonamarg Taxi: Distance, Fare and Route Guide
Sonamarg is eighty kilometres from Srinagar and takes about three hours — the longest and roughest of the standard day trips. It is also the one route where vehicle choice genuinely matters, because the surface deteriorates well before you arrive. Here is what the run involves, what it costs, and where your taxi stops.
For per-day fares and the full set of local rules across the valley, see our complete guide to booking a taxi in Kashmir.

How far is Sonamarg from Srinagar?
About 80 km, roughly three hours each way along the Sindh valley via Ganderbal and Kangan. Longer than Gulmarg or Pahalgam, and on noticeably rougher surface for the final stretch.
The route follows the Sindh river most of the way, which makes it the most scenic of the three main day trips. It is also the most tiring: six hours of driving in a single day, with the last section climbing towards the Zojila approach.
From Srinagar airport add about thirty minutes. If Sonamarg is your first day after landing, it makes for a long one — most itineraries put it mid-trip rather than on arrival day.
What does the Sonamarg taxi cost?
Quoted as a full-day return with waiting included, and slightly above the base city rate because of distance. Sedan from ₹2,500, Ertiga ₹2,800, Innova ₹3,000, Tempo Traveller ₹3,800 as starting points.
| Vehicle | Seats | Suits this route | From / day |
|---|---|---|---|
| Sedan — Dzire, Etios | 4 | Workable, but the least comfortable choice here | ₹2,500 |
| Ertiga / Rumion | 6 | Good compromise for families | ₹2,800 |
| Innova / Crysta | 7 | Recommended — suspension and seating height | ₹3,000 |
| Tempo Traveller | 12–17 | Groups | ₹3,800 |
| Force Urbania | 12–17 | Groups | ₹6,000–7,000 |
Of the main destinations, this is the one that justifies the Innova. The surface, the continuous winding and the length of the day all compound — particularly for elderly travellers or anyone prone to motion sickness. Route-by-route recommendations are in our car hire guide by destination.
Where does your taxi stop?
At the main Sonamarg point. The last stretch to Thajiwas Glacier is served only by local vehicles or ponies — tourist taxis do not go up. It is arranged and paid on the spot, in cash.
Agree the pony price and the exact turnaround point before you set off, not halfway up. Rates are negotiable and the most common complaint about Sonamarg is a ride that stopped short of where the rider expected.
In summer the walk to Thajiwas is manageable for reasonably fit travellers, which is a genuine alternative if you would rather skip the negotiation entirely.
Your driver parks and waits at the main point for as long as you are up there. That waiting time is included in the daily rate.
What is there to see?
Thajiwas Glacier is the main draw, reached by pony or local vehicle. Beyond that: the Sindh river valley on the drive itself, and in summer the meadows around the town. Most visitors spend two to three hours here.
Sonamarg — “meadow of gold” — is the gateway to the Zojila pass and the route towards Kargil and Leh. Even if you are not crossing, the drive itself is a substantial part of the experience, arguably more than the destination.
Because of the six hours in the car, this is a day that rewards leaving early. Departing at eight rather than ten changes the whole shape of it.
When is Sonamarg open?
Reliably from around April to November. In deep winter the road is weather dependent and closes after heavy snowfall. The Zojila crossing towards Kargil and Leh opens around May and shuts by late October.
If Sonamarg is in a December to February itinerary, keep it flexible rather than fixed — ask your driver the evening before. Full winter detail is in our Kashmir winter taxi guide.
For travellers continuing to Kargil or Leh, that is a separate multi-day booking quoted apart from valley sightseeing — each day, including halt days, at the normal daily rate.
Can Sonamarg be combined with another destination?
No. Six hours of driving plus time at Thajiwas fills the day completely. Gulmarg and Pahalgam are in the opposite direction and need their own days.
The one sensible pairing is Sonamarg as the outbound leg of a Kargil or Leh trip, where you stop there anyway before crossing Zojila. For a valley itinerary, treat it as a standalone day.
Frequently asked questions
How long is the Srinagar to Sonamarg drive?
About three hours each way for roughly 80 km, via Ganderbal and Kangan along the Sindh valley. It is the longest of the three standard day trips from Srinagar and the roughest surface of the three.
Can my taxi take me to Thajiwas Glacier?
No. The final stretch to Thajiwas is served only by local vehicles or ponies, arranged and paid on the spot in cash. Your driver waits at the main Sonamarg point while you go up.
Which vehicle is best for the Sonamarg road?
The Innova or Crysta. The surface deteriorates well before you arrive and the day is long, so suspension and seating height genuinely matter here in a way they do not on the Gulmarg road.
Is Sonamarg open in winter?
It is weather dependent between December and February and closes after heavy snowfall. Keep it as a flexible day in a winter itinerary rather than a fixed one, and confirm with your driver the previous evening.
Can I continue from Sonamarg to Leh?
Yes, over the Zojila pass, but that is a separate multi-day booking rather than a day trip. The route is seasonal, usually open from around May to late October, and closures happen at short notice.
How much time should I allow at Sonamarg?
Two to three hours is typical, which covers the pony or local vehicle up to Thajiwas and time at the meadow. With six hours of driving on top, that fills a full day comfortably.
