In winter the Tangmarg to Gulmarg road can require anti-skid chains during snowfall and icy conditions, and it can close. So agree a plan for three cases before you leave: a normal day, a chains-only day and a closed road. Ask what each costs, who confirms it on the day, and what happens to your booking. Nothing here is a live road report, and no booking guarantees Gondola access.
Booking, fares and the route are on our Srinagar to Gulmarg taxi page. Winter travel in general is in our winter taxi guide, and the booking process is in the complete guide to booking a taxi in Kashmir.
Who decides when chains are needed?
The local administration, not the taxi operator. An advisory from the SDM Gulmarg reported in January 2026 says all vehicles on the stretch must use anti-skid chains during snowfall and icy conditions, and bans heavy vehicles until further orders.
According to Kashmir Life (16 January 2026), the SDM Gulmarg directed the SDPO and Tehsildar Tangmarg to enforce the advisory, which stays in force “until further orders”. Advisories are temporary and have varied between seasons, and earlier ones were worded differently on 4×4 vehicles. We therefore do not claim that all SUVs qualify, or that all sedans are barred. Check the current advisory on the day, with your driver, hotel or the local police.
What are the possible situations and costs?
Four cases: normal access, chains required, a transfer needed, road closed. For each, check who confirms it and which cost question to ask.
| Situation | What to verify | Who confirms it | Cost question to ask |
|---|---|---|---|
| Normal access | No snowfall or ice; road open | Your driver, hotel, local advisory | Nothing extra expected; confirm anyway |
| Chains required | Is an advisory in force today? Can chains be fitted to your vehicle? | Local administration and police; the driver on the day | Who fits them, the local rate as applicable, who is paid |
| Transfer to another vehicle | Is your vehicle allowed above Tangmarg, or must you change? | Driver and local drivers at Tangmarg | One-way or return, waiting, luggage handling |
| Road closed | Official closure or hold | Local administration, traffic police | Reschedule or refund terms under our policy |
What does our quote include in each case?
Fuel, toll and parking are in the per-day rate. Chains fitted by the local union are paid to them directly at the local rate as applicable, and are not in our quote.
Under our fare inclusions, snow chains on the Tangmarg to Gulmarg stretch are fitted by the local union, charged at the local rate as applicable and paid directly to them. We publish no figure because we have no current official rate. Earlier press reports of a rate per pair are from older advisories and should not be treated as today’s price. Ask for the amount on the day before agreeing.
Our pages currently say your car stops at Tangmarg and you transfer to a chained local vehicle. The advisory above speaks of vehicles using chains. Ask whether chains can be fitted to your own vehicle or a change of vehicle is needed, and which applies to your vehicle class.
What about the Gondola?
The Gondola ticket is separate from the taxi fare, and a taxi booking does not guarantee access. Use the official operator’s booking channel and keep your slot flexible in winter.
The Gondola is run by the J&K Cable Car Corporation, whose site is jammukashmircablecar.com and which points to an official e-ticket portal. Book through the operator’s official channel only, and avoid sellers near the base station. Service can stop early or entirely for safety in bad weather, so ask what the ticket terms say before you pay.
What does a winter day look like?
Plan the day in a way that survives a chains-only rule or a late start.
Illustrative scenario only. Not a customer trip. A day trip from Srinagar. Depart early, reach Tangmarg and find fresh snow. The driver says chains are now required. You agree: chains (or a change of vehicle) at the local rate, the driver waits at Tangmarg, and the Gondola slot is moved later. The day ends later and costs more than a clear day. If the road closes, you use the reschedule or refund terms in our weather and trip changes policy: a free reschedule or a full refund of the advance for a government road closure or heavy snowfall.
What should you check before departure?
Use this list the evening before.
- Ask your driver and hotel if snow or ice is forecast for the road, and what the advisory says.
- Ask who handles chains and where, and the local rate.
- Carry cash for local vehicles, chains and anything paid on the spot.
- Agree where luggage goes if you change vehicles, and keep a small bag with essentials.
- For an overnight stay, confirm hotel access, the pickup time next day and the driver’s contact.
- Check your Gondola ticket terms, and keep a second day free if possible.

Frequently asked questions
Do snow chains apply every winter day?
No. The advisory refers to snowfall and icy conditions. On a clear day with no ice the requirement may not apply.
Will an SUV avoid the transfer?
Do not assume so. Rules have varied, and we do not claim all SUVs qualify. Ask on the day.
Who do I pay for chains?
Under our terms, the local union fitting them, directly, at the local rate as applicable. It is not added to our quote.
What if the road closes?
Under our policy you can reschedule free or take a full refund of the advance for a government closure or heavy snowfall. Send us the details on WhatsApp as soon as you know.
Does a taxi booking include Gondola access?
No. Tickets and operating status belong to the Gondola operator.
