How far is Gulmarg from Srinagar and how long does it take?

Quick answer

About 50 km, roughly two hours each way via Magam and Tangmarg. The road is well surfaced but winding throughout, so the time comes from the bends rather than the distance. Allow longer in peak season and after fresh snow.

Tangmarg is the point on this route that matters. It is where the road narrows, where the winter snow restriction begins, and where you would transfer to a chained vehicle if conditions require it. Everything before Tangmarg is easy driving in any vehicle class.

From Srinagar airport the drive is similar, around two hours, since the airport sits on the southern side of the city. If you are landing and heading straight up, share the flight number so the pickup tracks the actual arrival rather than the schedule.

What does a Srinagar to Gulmarg taxi cost?

Quick answer

Quoted as a full day rather than one way, because the standard trip is a return with all-day waiting included. From ₹2,500 for a sedan up to ₹3,800 for a Tempo Traveller or Urbania, with fuel, driver, tolls and parking in the figure.

Full-day return, Srinagar to Gulmarg. Indicative starting fares — depends on dates and season. Gondola and chained vehicle are separate.
VehicleSeatsSuitsFrom / day
Sedan — Dzire, Etios4Couples and small families₹2,500
Ertiga / Rumion6Families with luggage₹2,800
Innova / Crysta7Comfort, elderly travellers₹3,000
Tempo Traveller / Urbania12–17Groups₹3,800

Because the Gulmarg road is well surfaced, vehicle class matters less here than on the Sonamarg run. A sedan is genuinely comfortable for two or three people. Full rate detail is on our Srinagar taxi rates page.

Do you have to pre-book the Gondola?

Quick answer

Yes. Book at the official JKTDC portal, jktdc.co.in, before you travel. In season both Phase 1 and Phase 2 routinely sell out before midday, and this is the single most common Gulmarg disappointment.

Yaad rakho

Plan the Gulmarg day around your Gondola slot, not the other way round. Book the ticket first, then tell us the time and we will set the departure to match. Avoid anyone selling same-day tickets near the base station.

The Gondola is not part of the taxi fare, and neither are pony rides, sledges, ATV rides or ski hire at the top — all negotiated locally and paid in cash.

Weather can close Phase 2 at short notice even when Phase 1 is running, so an early arrival gives you the best chance of both.

What happens on this route in heavy snow?

Quick answer

Between Tangmarg and Gulmarg, heavy snowfall restricts the road to vehicles fitted with chains. Your car stops at Tangmarg and you transfer to a chained local vehicle for the final climb. It is charged separately and applies to every vehicle class.

This is one of four local rules that apply to every private taxi in Kashmir, all of them set out in the complete guide to booking a taxi in Kashmir. It is enforced by the local administration for safety, not a commercial arrangement, and no vehicle class is exempt — a Tempo Traveller and a Dzire are treated identically. On clear winter days with no fresh snow the restriction often is not in force and your own vehicle goes all the way, but you will not know which until the morning.

In a serious spell the road can shut for a few hours or a full day. If Gulmarg is the reason for the trip, put it early in the itinerary and keep a spare day. Winter planning in full is in our Kashmir winter taxi guide.

Taxi from Srinagar waiting at Gulmarg Kashmir during a full day trip
Above Tangmarg the road climbs into the meadow. In heavy snow this last stretch needs a chained vehicle whatever you booked.

How long should you spend at Gulmarg?

Quick answer

Three to four hours covers the Gondola and a walk around the meadow. With four hours of driving on top, that fills a day — do not try to add Srinagar sightseeing on the way back.

Beyond the Gondola there is the meadow itself, St Mary’s Church, the golf course in summer and, between January and March, a working ski resort with equipment hire and instructors available locally. Your driver parks and waits the whole time at no extra charge.

Where Gulmarg sits in a wider itinerary, and which vehicle each destination actually needs, is covered in our car hire guide by destination.

Frequently asked questions

Can Gulmarg be done as a day trip from Srinagar?

Yes, and that is how most visitors do it. Leave around eight or nine, spend three to four hours at Gulmarg, return by evening. The driver waits throughout and the day is charged as one flat rate.

Is the Gondola ticket included in the taxi fare?

No. Gondola tickets are booked separately at jktdc.co.in and should be pre-booked before you travel. Pony rides, sledges, ATV rides and ski hire at Gulmarg are also separate and paid locally in cash.

What does the chained vehicle at Tangmarg cost?

It varies with conditions and demand and is paid on the spot in cash. It applies only during heavy snowfall. Your driver waits at Tangmarg while you go up and continues with you afterwards.

Do I need an SUV for the Gulmarg road?

No. The road is well surfaced and comfortable in a sedan. Choose your vehicle for luggage and group size, or for the rougher routes elsewhere in your itinerary such as Sonamarg or Doodhpathri.

When is the best time to visit Gulmarg?

January and February for snow and skiing, April to June for green meadows and easy driving, September and October for clear autumn light. Gulmarg holds snow longer than anywhere else in the valley.

Can I stay overnight in Gulmarg instead of returning?

Yes, and it suits skiers and anyone wanting an early Gondola slot. If the driver stays too, that day is billed at the same daily rate as any other – there is no separate night-halt charge.
