Yes, but treat it as the longest of the three arrival-day transfers. Sonamarg is around 87 km from Srinagar airport, and door to door you should budget three hours rather than the two the distance suggests.
The route crosses to the northern side of Srinagar and then follows the Sindh valley through Ganderbal and Kangan. The first part is city-edge traffic, which is what makes this transfer slower than the Gulmarg or Pahalgam runs despite being a similar distance. In peak season the Ganderbal stretch alone can take forty minutes.
Send the flight number when booking. On this route a delayed arrival genuinely changes the plan — the Sindh valley road has narrow sections and is not one to be doing for the first time after dark.
It depends on the landing time. A morning flight makes it comfortable. Anything after about one in the afternoon and you arrive with no daylight left to use, which defeats the point of going.
The honest version: Sonamarg is the destination most often crammed into a schedule that cannot hold it. A morning landing, a three-hour drive, an afternoon at Thajiwas and an evening return to Srinagar is a full and satisfying day. The same plan on an afternoon flight is six hours in a car for a photograph in fading light.
If your flight lands late, the better move is a night in Srinagar and a proper early start the next morning. Sonamarg rewards leaving by eight far more than any other valley destination.
Your private taxi stops at Sonamarg. The last stretch up to Thajiwas is done by local union vehicle or on pony, hired there and paid in cash. No private car goes up, whatever you have booked.
This is the same kind of local arrangement that applies at the Pahalgam inner valleys, and it catches people out in the same way. Rates are set locally and negotiated at the point; your own driver parks at Sonamarg and waits the whole time at no extra charge. Budget a separate cash amount for it before you set off.
Sonamarg is a road-status destination, not a fixed one. In heavy snow the road closes, and beyond Sonamarg the Zojila pass towards Kargil and Leh is seasonal — open roughly late spring to autumn, and dependent on the day.
We check the live status before confirming any winter booking on this route rather than promising it and turning back at Kangan.
All of the union and access rules that apply across the valley are set out in our complete guide to booking a taxi in Kashmir.
Yes, when Zojila is open. Sonamarg is the last town before the pass, so it is the natural first-night stop on the Srinagar to Leh crossing rather than a there-and-back day trip.
Done that way the arrival day earns its keep: land, drive to Sonamarg, stay the night, and cross Zojila the following morning with a full day ahead of you. Attempting the airport-to-Leh run in one go is not something we book — it is too long, and the altitude gain is too fast to be sensible.
Which vehicle suits which destination across a full itinerary is covered in our car hire guide by destination, and the route itself in detail on the Srinagar to Sonamarg taxi page.
About 87 km. Budget three hours door to door rather than going by distance — the Ganderbal stretch on the northern edge of Srinagar is the slow part.
Yes, with a morning flight. Land, drive up, spend the afternoon at Thajiwas, return in the evening. It is a long day but a common one and it is billed as a single day.
No. The local union vehicle or pony to Thajiwas is hired at Sonamarg and paid there in cash. Your driver waits below at no extra charge.
Usually, but it closes after heavy snowfall and can reopen the same day or take longer. We confirm live road status before every winter booking on this route.
Not for the surface, but it is the valley route where extra ground clearance and a higher seat are most worth having. Of the day-trip destinations this is the one that most justifies stepping up a class.
Yes, when Zojila is open, which is roughly late spring to autumn. Sonamarg is the usual first-night halt on that crossing. Some Ladakh restricted areas also carry permit limits that do not apply equally to foreign nationals.
